Dawn Ferrara is a marriage counselor with a private practice in Covington, Louisiana.

How long have you been practicing, and what is your educational background?

I’ve been practicing for over 25 years. I did my Master’s degree at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans and I did my PsyD at Cal Southern University, and I am a licensed professional counselor and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT).

“My favorite part about being a therapist is that moment when people realize that they can affect change.”

Do you have expertise with certain issues?

My area of expertise is working with couples in pre-marital counseling. A lot of young couples come to me who are going to put families together, blended families asking, “how do we do that in a way that’s healthy?”

Do you have training in a particular methodology?

I was trained in what is called “family systems”, and that’s a really fancy way of saying that when we look at couples, we look at things that are happening in a relationship, we look at it in the context of what is happening around them. We look at the social aspects and jobs and kids and all the things that go into making a relationship.

Do you have a client success story you’re especially proud of?

I had a couple come to me several years ago where their children were all starting to leave home, and they realized that they really didn’t know each other anymore. Even though they ran a business together, they’d raised children together, they were together every day at the business and then at home.

They realized that as their children were leaving, that they really had nothing in common. So they really had to work to find new ways of connecting now that their children were grown. I ran into them recently, and they’re doing beautifully. So I was really proud of them for that.

Is that a pretty common issue that couples have?

It is. You know because people spend so much time raising children and focusing on careers, by the time they get to that point where kids are moving out and their careers are slowing down a little they look around and go, “Oh wait, who are you?”

“If you’re asking the question, ‘do I think we need some counseling’, you’re probably there.”

What would be your best advice to a couple considering marriage counseling right now?

Don’t be afraid to do it. If you’re asking the question, “do I think we need some counseling”, you’re probably there.

Which towns or cities do most of your clients come from?

My office is in Covington, Louisiana, which is just north of New Orleans. Most of my clients come from Saint Tammany Parish, Slidell, Mandeville, Covington. I also see some folks from Washington Parrish, Bogalusa, Franklinton.
